Scan to Cloud

Abstract

In the pursuit of enhancing building energy efficiency, understanding the U-Value, a metric indicative of thermal transmittance, is crucial. The project “Scan-to-Cloud” aimed to develop a system for the automatic categorization of U-Value during measurements and its subsequent integration into a cloud-based CAD model. Such an endeavour promises to revolutionise the transition from raw data to actionable insights in building energy analysis. Two primary methodologies were explored: Infrared (IR) measurements for broad thermal mapping and point measurements for localised precision. A novel approach merges the strengths of both methods. Collaborative efforts with Heka (Finland) enabled real-world testing, resulting in the creation of visual data and a 3D model, which provides a comprehensive view of a building's thermal dynamics in combination. The project also emphasised automation, with semi-automatic U-Value assignments and seamless integration into standard energy consulting software. The findings underscore the potential of digital, automated, and integrated tools in the realm of energetic analysis. As the project concludes, it sets the stage for a future where building energy analysis is more accessible, efficient, and grounded in cutting-edge technology.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Regional Identity, Local Government, Building and Digitalization of the State of North-Rhine-Westphalia with the grant number 35.05.04.01-IB-2021-003-8.
